Using Bathtub-Refinishing Kits

Bathtub refinishing is a cheap and easy way to restore your bath or shower basin to make it look virtually brand-new. This is a great alternative to replacing your entire basin. Basically, it involves using a special epoxy paint that creates a thick and reliable coat over the existing surface so your basin will not only look brand-new, but it will also be completely waterproof your tub. This article explains how you can refinish your own bathtub using easy-to-use bathtub-refinishing kits.

Fixing Holes

First of all, bathroom refinishing kits don't work if your fiberglass has holes in it that are actually leaking water. While they might fill and patch microscopic holes, you need to patch your own fiberglass holes if there any bigger than a fingernail. Fiberglass patch is something you will need to apply separately, but it is also easy to apply. Of course, if you have a large hole in your basin, it might be too difficult to patch yourself, and you'll probably need to hire a professional. You might also need to completely replace your bathtub basin if there is a certain extent of damage.

But, most people who use bathroom refinishing kits are simply doing so because their basin has faded, stained, or scratched, or it just looks old and sloppy. Bathtub-refinishing kits are the perfect solution to this problem.

Prepping the Fiberglass

Before you apply the actual epoxy paint, you need to prepare the surface. The most important thing is making sure that the surface is equally smooth throughout. If there are spots that are rough or rusty, you need to use the provided sandpaper to smooth them out. Many kits will even include fiberglass sandpaper or buffing pads. It is also very important that you clean the surface as well as possible before you apply any glaze. You don't want to trap any fiberglass dust underneath the epoxy. Of course, the epoxy glaze is going to help cover and hide many blemishes, but you're going to have the best results if your surface is as smooth and clean before you begin.

Applying the Epoxy

Many kits will also include the actual roller you used to apply the epoxy. If not, you want to get a small, smooth roller and paint tray. Actually applying the solution is very similar to the technique you would use to apply a normal paint. It is usually suggested that you apply at least two coats of the epoxy so that you end up with a thick and solid finish.

You usually need to wait at least 24 hours for the epoxy to fully dry before you can start to use your bath or shower again. With the new white finish, you are going to be adding a fresh white color to your bathroom, making the entire space seem a little newer.
